Angier School Council

Purpose and Membership
The School Council is an elected body of parents, teachers, and community members that advises the principal. The council provides a forum where teachers and parents can discuss matters of concern to the school. It helps formulate the annual School Improvement Plan, reviews Angier’s budget, and discusses any other matters relevant to the educational goals of the school and the educational needs of the children. Its meetings are open to the community and occur approximately every other month during the school year. The Council consists of equal numbers of staff (the principal plus others) and parents together with one community representative who is otherwise unconnected with the school. In addition, the PTO co-presidents attend Council meetings as non-voting members to ensure close cooperation between the Council and the PTO. Parent representatives are elected each fall for 2- or 3-year terms by all the parents in a written ballot organized by the Council. Staff representatives are elected for 2-year terms by the staff. The principal appoints the community representatives. One of the Council members, chosen by the Council, serves as co-chair with the principal.

Meetings
Council meetings are held approximately every other month. The date, time, and agenda of each meeting are published in the Angier PTO online Calendar in the greensheet at least one week prior to each meeting. Meetings are open to the Angier community, and time is set aside at the beginning and end of each meeting for public input.

Sub-Committees
The Council can form sub-committees or task forces to study a particular issue in more depth than is possible in Council meetings, or to allow a broader spectrum of opinion in the debate. Membership of these groups is drawn from the parent/teacher community as a whole and is usually coordinated with the PTO. Sub-committees are formed on an as-needed basis.
