Angier in ActionWeek of March 16th, 2025

GREETINGS!

Dear Angier Families,

We had a productive week of learning at Angier! Students were excited to hear about Angier’s math-focused take on March Madness: March MATHness. Each class will be following a Women’s NCAA basketball team, and each class will continue to advance their progress on ST Math. More details are included below.

Spring conferences begin March 20th. These are an important opportunity to build and strengthen home-school connections. Please be sure to sign up for a time to meet with your child’s teacher.

Have a terrific week ahead!

Warmly,

Orla

MARCH CELEBRATIONS & OBSERVANCES

We are committed to respectfully acknowledging a variety of celebrations and observances, ensuring that Angier is an inclusive and affirming space for the diverse identities and experiences of our students, staff, and families. We appreciate you sharing the holidays and celebrations that are meaningful to your family; you may continue to do so HERE.

During March, Angier families celebrate and observe a number of holidays. We wish you a lucky Baba Marta Day, a reflective Ash Wednesday, and a Purim full of joy. May Holi bring bright colors, generosity, and cheer. We hope St. Patrick’s Day brings good luck, and may Ugadi and Nowruz mark new beginnings.

We wish those observing Ramadan a meaningful time full of community, gratitude, and reflection.

  • If your child is fasting and would prefer not to be in the cafeteria during lunchtime, please just let the classroom teacher know. We can certainly accommodate this.

We also recognize Women’s History Month to celebrate the vital contributions of women in American history. This year’s Women’s History Month theme, Moving Forward Together, celebrates “Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.”

MARCH MADNESS AT ANGIER

For the next three weeks, all classes will be earning points during our own math-focused version of March Madness.

Each class will be following a Women’s NCAA basketball team and each class will continue to advance their progress on ST Math. Points can be earned in three different ways: 1) If a class team wins a game during the Women’s NCAA tournament, the class earns points! 2) If a class increases their puzzle goal percentage by 3% in a week, the class earns points! 3) If a class participates in one of the bonus activities, the class earns points.

  • This week’s bonus is to wear your class team colors on Friday, 3/21 for a school-wide March Mathness Spirit Day!

Get ready for a slam dunk of a good time!

REMINDER:  GUM AT SCHOOL

A reminder that students are not allowed to chew gum in school without permission of a teacher and parent. Gum often leads to sticky and messy situations—on desks, floors, and even clothing. It can also become a distraction in the classroom and is difficult to clean when not disposed of properly.

That said, we understand that some students benefit from chewing gum for various reasons. In these cases, parents/guardians should make arrangements with your child’s teachers, who will distribute it to the student.

CELEBRATING CROSSING GUARDS

Celebrating the Crossing Guards at your school makes a real difference in letting them know how much they are appreciated. Throughout March, you have the opportunity to recognize these everyday heroes by nominating them for the MA Safe Routes to School annual Crossing Guard of the Year Award. See information below.

SCHOOL TRANSFER INFORMATION

Each year, the Newton Public Schools consider applications for Newton students to transfer to a school outside of their home (assigned) district. School transfer placements are limited and made on a space available basis. Newton residents, as well as members of NTA Units A, B, C, D, E, NESA, and the Custodial Union, may apply for placement of their children in a Newton Public School. Please note: students placed in specialized education programs outside of NPS classrooms do not need to apply for a School Transfer Request.

NEWTON’S S.P.A.C.E CAMP

Newton’s S.P.A.C.E.  is a four-week summer enrichment program run by the Newton Public Schools from July 7th  through July 31st.  This year, it will be held at Angier. Students entering kindergarten through 9th grade in the Fall of 2025 are eligible to attend.  We offer two programs – an upper camp (entering 5th-9th grade) and a lower camp (entering kindergarten- 4th grade).

LOWER CAMP – Campers are assigned to age appropriate classes taught by two licensed teachers.  Teachers create project-based activities that focus on the theme of the lower camp.  Last summer, the theme was “Summer Olympics”.  Campers learned about the history, countries, cultures, and sports of the Olympics.  Lower Campers will also attend various specials throughout the week led by certified staff, which include Physical Education, Yoga/Mindfulness, Art and Science classes.

UPPER CAMP –  Campers will create their own schedules by choosing from a variety of electives to design their own camp program.  Elective choices include studio and digital arts, performing arts, athletics, STEM, music, and language arts classes.
